Activity
Celebrate the 100th Day of School by making a collage frame that can showcase your child’s favorite piece of art. She’ll have fun making something that also has a functional purpose.

What You Need:
- Old magazines and catalogs that can be cut up
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Matte poster board around size 16 x 20 inches, to frame art of around size 11 x 14 inches
- Your child’s favorite piece of completed art work of around size 11 x 14 inches
What You Do:
- Explain to your child that she will make a poster frame for displaying one of her favorite pieces of art. Help her find completed art work of hers that measures around 11 x 14 inches.
- Place her artwork in the center of the matte poster board. Use the glue stick to help her glue the artwork onto the middle of the poster board.
- Now she can decorate the edges of the poster frame. She will need to cut out 100 pictures from magazines and catalogs. Tell her to look for pictures of things that she likes, that represent her, or that go with her artwork.
- Have her glue the 100 magazine cut-outs onto the matte poster frame around the central artwork. She may want to glue 25 pictures onto each side of the artwork (25 on top, 25 beneath the artwork, and 25 on each side of the artwork).
- Have your child “show and tell” the finished collage art frame by telling you why she picked certain magazine pictures and what they mean to her!
Did You Know? The word collage comes from the French word coller, which means “to glue.” Artists Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso came up with the term in the early 1900s as collage became a popular type of art.
