beat donald trump? if she were at the top of the ticket? >> look, i wouldn't have picked vice president trump to be vice president, but i think she was not qualified to be president. so let's start there. number one, the fact is that the consideration is that i think i'm the most qualified person to run for president. i beat him once and i will beat him again. >> the president's fumble there, referring to kamala harris as vice president trump. this caps an extraordinary day as more democrats, allies and donors express publicly losing confidence in his reelection prospects. president biden did not reassure them of their concerns with another ill timed fumble this afternoon at a nato event, he mistakenly introduced ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky as russian president vladimir putin. >> now i want to hand it over to the president of ukraine, who has as much courage as he has determination. ladies and gentlemen, president putin,

president putin, you can't beat president putin, president zelensky, i'm so focused on beating putin. we got to worry about it anyway. mr. president, i'm better. you are a hell of a lot better. >> as you can see there, the president tried to make light of the slip, but it comes as a new abc news poll with the washington post and ipsos shows an overwhelming 85% of the country thinks biden is just too old for another term. and seeing the polls, 14 house democrats and one democratic senator have now joined the calls for president joe biden to step aside. >> house democratic leader hakeem jeffries says internal conversations are still ongoing, but a no doubt biden's news conference performance will be a topic of those discussions. and joining us now is abc seven news insider phil matier phil, we're seeing reaction from both trump and biden about that kamala harris flub today. trump posted on truth social. crooked joe begins his big boy press conference with i would have picked vice president trump to

thing and then stopping and then moving back and forth. so that is the same joe biden, by the way, that we saw four years ago when he ran against donald trump, if you recall, and especially in the primaries, he is known for talking and talking and talking and interrupting himself and interrupting himself. exactly. and but now it's a slower and it's a different joe biden. and that's what the democrats are looking at. he made it clear he is staying in the race. >> and you mentioned that you've been speaking with statewide democrats. i'm thinking back to the comments that house speaker nancy pelosi made on morning joe just yesterday, saying, let's wait until after the nato summit to reassess things. here we are. the nato summit is now over a day full of flubs. how do you think democrats will begin to reassess the president's future in this race? >> you can reassess his future in terms of what you feel and how it might affect your race. if you're a congressperson or a senator, but the president made it very clear, he says, i've got the money, i've got the organization, and i'm the only

one that's got the time left because the time window is shutting down. those are practical things. those are they're not wishful things. i wish somebody else would be there. he's just saying, i'm in. this is it. let's go for it. the polls don't show me slipping or gaining. we can do this if he continues to believe that, the question becomes, what do democrats do about that? and that takes me back to the beginning, where i said, they're kind of like deer in the headlights. they don't know what to do. we've never had a situation like this. >> however, one thing they are doing is we mentioned a new for biden campaign is now testing head to head matchups of vice president harris against former president trump. it's a strategic shift obviously happening behind the scenes. what do you make of that? >> there are polls are made constantly. yes. and you are looking at that. it would be remiss of him not to. and you think, okay, what if it shows that she wins? she could win. okay. that's one thing. what if it shows that she wouldn't win? does that reinforce the idea of staying there right now? the issue is beating donald trump.

that is what the democrats are most concerned about. that is what the president is most concerned about. we're not hearing a lot of talk about, except for the questions from reporters, which, by the way, was literally like a shark tank. every question was aimed at, are you ready to can you still hold office and run his motion the election. the focus is on the election. as for after the election remains to be seen. >> they will kick that can down the road. their first job, from the democratic perspective, is to get elected. >> dan, in politics, the only thing that counts is a win. if you don't win, you're not in. you can't govern. there's no policy. and that's what each one of these democrats is looking at. not only has how can joe biden win, but do i win as well. yeah. >> all right thanks phil. >> appreciate it. well a big day for the president. also a big day for oakland mayor shengtao. she responded today to recent questions about oakland's reported crime drop. the police department says overall crime is down 33. but according to the san francisco chronicle, that

number was based on incomplete stats from last year, and the number may be closer to 20. >> there has been no change in how the oakland police department has reported our weekly crime data since they began sharing it with the community in 2011. so this is opd's process in regards to being transparent. other cities, they actually are not this transparent. >> mayor tao went on to say there are discrepancies if crimes are miscategorized when they're reported and there's typically about a three month lag between a report being filed and the data being reflected in statistics. mayor tao also commented on the fbi raid of her home and three other locations in oakland as a part of a political corruption probe. when i asked her earlier today on midday live if there was any wrongdoing, this was the mayor's response. >> i am not the subject of this investigation. i have done nothing wrong, and i expect that there will be an opportunity to say more. but now isn't the time and that i am fully cooperating with the investigation and look

forward to the opportunity to vindicate myself. >> myrtle maintains that she is focused on doing her job in handling issues impacting the city of oakland. check out the timeline of the raids involving mayor tao. you'll find a day by day guide on abc seven news.com and inside of the abc seven bay area app. >> check that out, but let's turn your attention now to the weather. we are in the hottest day of the heat wave that we're in today, and we have a spare the air alert in effect as well. >> even a bit warmer today in san francisco to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking these conditions. so sandhya, what's finally going to change around here? >> those temperatures are going to come down, believe it or not. julian and dan, let's take a look at the high temperatures for today. they didn't come down that's for sure. it got up to 111 today at the livermore co-op site, which tied the record set back in 1961. the official livermore airport reading was 109. as you see there, 111 in fairfield. yeah, it was a scorcher. 108 in concord, 101 santa rosa, napa, 74 in the city, 84 in oakland, 99. in san

jose, sitting pretty half moon bay, a mild 62 degree day. excessive heat warnings for the far inland valleys continues. the rest of the region, other than the coast and the city, under a heat advisory. this is in effect until 8 p.m. tomorrow. solano county they extended the heat advisory until 9 p.m. saturday, so there's still an increased risk of heat related illnesses. if you are going to step out tonight. 7:00 still 90s and one hundreds in our inland valleys, you will notice those temperatures not coming down very fast away from the coast at 9:00. still in the 80s and the 90s, it is going to be a cooling though at the coastline as we look at our air quality. it has been suffering moderate to even poor in places like livermore right now. as we look at the spare, the air that is in effect for today, looking at friday and saturday, though, there should be some improvement. we are looking at moderate air quality for the bay area. dan julian okay, thank you so much. >> sandhya. >> product like that would be a

massive benefit to us out in these fires. >> some north bay students are building a better bay area. they're helping out firefighters and next, the latest on scott peterson's efforts to get a new trial. >> his hope hinging on dna testing. >> and still to come, an update on a shocking tragedy on the island of alameda. four members of one family killed a one year old child left in critical condition, and his father

road, just off interstate 80. it's not clear if anyone else was hurt in the crash, but at least two other vehicles appear to be involved. investigators say the driver who struck the officer tried to run from the scene, but bystanders stopped her. she was then arrested by the chp. vacaville police identified the officer as matthew bowen. he had been with the force since june of last year and previously worked for the concord police department. officer bowen is survived by his wife and two sons. >> now to a story. we are following closely scott peterson's effort to get a new trial today in san mateo county court. the judge decided to hold off on a ruling on dna lab testing on a piece of tape until at least monday. peterson was not there. he appeared remotely from a state prison in amador county. the testing itself has become hotly debated in court, so i think it's very important that you remember that the dna testing could end up having to be brought forward in court.

>> so the government is very concerned about making sure that chain of custody is kept intact with integrity. >> peterson was convicted of killing his wife, laci, and their unborn son, and sentenced to death. that sentence was later overturned and he is now serving life in prison without the possibility of parole. the man charged with murder for pushing a woman into an oncoming bart train is once again scheduled to be in court tomorrow. it's been rescheduled several times since last week. the judge is waiting for a mental health evaluation of the 49 year old suspect. he is accused of pushing 74 year old cortizone dan. dan into a train at the powell street bart station on july first. dan dan hit her head and later died. a judge has denied bail for a man accused of planting a bomb in san jose, then calling police on himself. the 56 year old was arraigned today and is scheduled to be back in court to enter a plea on july the 29th. he had refused to go to court before today. last wednesday, the san

jose police bomb squad safely detonated, detonated a device found behind a mental health resource center near ritter park drive in fox lane. >> an update now from the abc7 news i-team on an international story we've covered for five years. attorneys for a bay area man convicted in the death of a plain clothes police officer in rome are now asking a judge if he can serve the remainder of his sentence on home detention. last week, an italian appeals court reduced the sentences of finnegan elder and gabriel natali yort. the court also reduced natalie youghts conviction to what amounts to negligence. his attorneys are arguing that since he no longer convicted of a violent crime, he should be allowed home confinement. he's been in prison since 2019 and has was resentenced to serve 11 years. the court's decision could come by the end of the month. of course, we'll follow it closely. the two friends both attended marin's tamalpais high school in the summer of 2019. they were in

italy on vacation. the deadly confrontation happened in what the men describe as a drug deal gone wrong, and acts of self-defense. now, abc seven news i-team reporter dan noyes again has followed this from the beginning and produced an award winning documentary about this case called 32 seconds a deadly night in rome. it's available on on demand on the abc seven bay area app. >> some really innovative high school students are working to build a better bay area with an invention to help firefighters. the team from calistoga high school was just awarded a grant from mit for the creation of a smart device, which can keep firefighters cool on the job. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke with the intrepid students and their teacher. >> this is the device that we made for firefighters. >> this is not a silicon valley tech firm. it's a classroom at calistoga high school, where these intrepid students are breaking barriers of innovation. >> in addition, we have fire fire resistant material on the

outside. >> science and technology students have spent six months developing this device, designed to keep firefighters cool on the job. it's portable. >> it's essentially a backpack. >> this working prototype pumps cool water through tubes to the forehead of a firefighter, and uses smart technology and led lights to regulate your body's temperature. >> these leds will go off once your human body or ambient temperature has reached a certain threshold. >> how does it feel? >> it feels good, the cool pack is definitely cool on the forehead. >> the idea born from years of watching devastating wildfires in napa county, a chance for students to give back to their community. >> our town would have burnt to the ground if we wouldn't have had the firefighters saving us, you know? and they're out there risking their lives. all right. >> so we're going to invite the calistoga team on down the calistoga high invent team recently got the attention of mit, where they won a grant for their invention and assistance from microsoft to patent the

device. >> we are patent pending from microsoft, a helping us. >> mit's whole thing is that they want you to invent for helping other people. >> the students now taking their idea a step forward by collaborating with the calistoga fire department on how the invention could be used, especially during a real life fire. >> our gear, as it is, is already hot. it's been an early start to the fire season, so a product like that would be a massive benefit to us out in these fires. >> the invention has other applications like keeping agricultural workers cool on the job and warm in winter months. >> there's nothing stopping us from getting this out in the shelves. >> one day the device could be available to all, but for now, this class has a very proud teacher. >> they are so amazing. >> i would cry if i wasn't on tv. right now they're just incredible. they work so hard in calistoga. >> cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> that is so clever. yeah, good for them. we could use that now. i'm kidding. >> yeah, a lot of people,

especially inland, right. >> i'm meteorologist sandhya patel is here with the latest on the heat wave. sandy. yeah. >> tomorrow's a final day of this heat wave. okay, dan and julian, let me show you a live picture. right now, and i will show you what it looks like from our emeryville camera. it's a little shaky view, but certainly a lot of haze in the air as the high pressure has put a lid on the atmosphere and all that pollution is just kind of gathering with the heat building. so 11 degrees warmer compared to 24 hours ago in san carlos, up eight in san jose, six degrees warmer concord, up eight in santa rosa. certainly getting a nice breeze right along the coastline and in the city, 36 miles an hour onshore. but you're not feeling it in the inland areas. and look at the golden gate bridge. there was some fog earlier today, but it's gone. it's sunny, 72, in the city. oakland, 79 degrees. hayward. you're in the upper 80s along with redwood city. 94, in san jose from our sutro tower camera seeing bright blue skies right now. upper 90s in santa rosa, 87 in napa. but look at

the triple digits from fairfield to concord to livermore, our hot spot right now. clearly a dangerous 109 in fairfield. so high pressure building in bringing that heat. but as it's nudging westward, it's also drying up some of the monsoon moisture over the sierra, where they are seeing thunderstorms over the weekend. tahoe has a higher likelihood of seeing thunderstorms there, but also cooler weather for them, which is good news. certainly, the marine layer will be back along the coastline, but we have one more day of dealing with the triple digit heat and moderate to major heat risk inland as we head into tomorrow, so just keep that in mind as we look at a live view from san jose. camera. the sun is shining. tomorrow is the last day of triple digits. your weekend forecast cooling trend for all areas and early next week it's back to average summer weather. temperatures will reflect that tonight. 7:00 we're still going to see those 90s and one hundreds while inland as we head into 10 p.m, the coolest spot to be will be

the coast of course, 80s and 90s inland. tomorrow morning, temperatures dropping off away from the coastline, still remaining warm, though, and then quickly warming up into the 90s. by noontime inland triple digits eventually for the afternoon. and once again, it's going to be a slow going cool off tomorrow evening. so your morning temperature is anywhere from the mid 50s where the fog will be sitting clear skies inland mid 70s in antioch tomorrow afternoon you're going to notice the summer microclimates, just like today. 100 in the south bay and morgan hill, 94, in san jose on the peninsula, 90 in redwood city, 82. san mateo, mid 60s coast side, downtown san francisco 72 degrees. the sunset district 67. and in the north bay you will notice up to 98. in santa rosa. really still dangerously hot around ukiah and cloverdale. 95 in san rafael, heading into the east bay, 80 in oakland. hercules. these temperatures well above average 86, san leandro 90. in fremont. inland areas will not be as hot

as it was today. still hot. don't get me wrong, 104 in antioch and livermore, 102 degrees in concord. your accuweather seven day forecast. tomorrow is the last day of this heat wave. you'll notice we're out of the one hundreds for the weekend, dropping down to the mid 90s saturday, and then the low 90s for sunday and monday. low 60s coast uh- close to average on tuesday. before we turn things around and the temperatures start to creep back up again. but it's not going to be extreme. julian and dan, we'll actually just see some typical summertime pattern. >> i'm glad we're losing that menacing hot graphic on your seven day forecast. >> yeah, it's nice to see that that is intimidating. >> it really is. all right. >> appreciate it. san diego well free friday french fries. >> it's a mouthful, but it's a delicious mouthful.

particularly in oakland. it's yet another effort to help build a better bay area. >> but he's also pulling back an offer to provide prosecutors in alameda county. >> here's abc seven news reporter ryan curry with the story. >> it's been almost one year since governor newsom announced chp would help patrol oakland. on thursday, he called that decision a success. >> has already generated 1162 stolen vehicles that have been recovered, 1162 the commissioner noted, and now 5556 guns that are linked to crimes. >> however, oakland still deals with brazen crime. now the governor is taking it a step further. he announced at least 20 chp officers will be in oakland seven days a week. he also said some of the people arrested could be prosecuted by the state instead of the county. >> we're going to be moving some

of the prosecution to the state of california. the attorney general's office. >> that decision comes as the governor rescinded an offer to give prosecutors to alameda county district attorney pamela price. the governor's office says da price had not been cooperating, but the governor said many arrests will still get turned over to her office for the cases that do go before the alameda county da. how would you like her to act and respond? >> she was independently elected. i'm not here to offer advice or counsel. i can only observe what i've observed. we extended a hand of partnership. unfortunately, it wasn't reciprocated. >> district attorney price had a press event thursday afternoon and responded with this. >> the question is, are you saying that we never told them we weren't interested and we were in the process? and then the governor's office said, no, forget it. yes. that is exactly what happened. >> the move by the governor is drawing mixed reviews. ken houston recently had a lot of his stuff stolen. >> we welcome his decision. he's changing from 42 shifts to 164

shifts. it's needed. our city is in dire need, but the anti-police terror project thinks this won't deter any crime. >> we want our youths to stop. engaging in these acts. we have to give them resources and something to do and some guidance. right. there are programs that are proven that do those things. we're just underinvested in them. >> this move from the governor is only temporary. he says the new patrol will last only four months in oakland. ryan curry, abc seven news and east bay family and a community is mourning the loss of four family members, including a six year old boy. >> police say the boy's father shot them inside a home on kittyhawk road in a quiet corner of alameda. tonight. that father is in custody and a one year old child who was also shot remains in the hospital today. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn talked with neighbors who knew this family. >> it's heartbreaking. i can't really comprehend that

he's gone. >> neighbor diane is devastated by the news on kittyhawk road in alameda. that's where a six year old boy and three other family members were killed wednesday night. a one year old was shot and is in critical condition. diane lives nearby. >> i don't know how i'm going to tell my three year old when he asks where his friend is, diane says her son played with a six year old and the one year old shooting victims. they loved riding their bikes up and down and they would push the little one and, you know, a little push car. >> alameda police say the event unfolded at the home around 9 p.m. wednesday night. police arrived after getting a call from a neighbor. >> the officers were in front of the residence, providing aid to his father in law, and at that time, he started coming out the front door of his residence. >> they say after the suspect surrendered peacefully, they were able to determine how many people were shot. >> it was his father in law, his mother in law, his wife, his eldest son and his youngest son. the youngest son is the one

that's in critical condition. >> the motive for the shooting is still unclear. a six year old and a one year old were shot and so were elderly people. >> what he did was tragic, sad and the actions of a coward. >> neighbors say the family moved to the home last november or december. this thursday afternoon, this neighbor is still processing what happened. he says the suspect spoke spanish pretty well and the family killed was from el salvador. >> he took to uh- his uh- family's spanish speaking culture and was practically fluent. and, i, i'm >> police say the shooting stems from a domestic incident, but neighbors say they never saw any red flags or signs of mental distress. they're still in disbelief that it all ended with a family, including a young child killed and another young child critically hurt. >> it's unbelievable. there's so many, so many things that i would imagine that make it hard to get to where we are now.

during a turbulent flight from orlando to hartford, according to the complaint. she says a crew member spilled scalding hot water on her while serving tea to the passenger that was sitting behind her. she says she suffered second and third degree burns. the woman says the temperature was unreasonably hot, and says the ongoing turbulence made the in-flight beverage service unsafe. >> and this week, for the second time in four months, a wheel fell off a united flight during takeoff from california. the latest incident happened monday at lax. it also happened back in march at sfo. as you may remember, the tire plummeted to the ground, hitting several cars in sfo's employee parking lot before bouncing over a fence and landing in the hertz rental car lot near the end of the runway. now, for the first time, we're

hearing from a woman whose car was totaled. abc seven news reporter melanie woodrow has the story give you a heads up? >> the tower called. they think that you lost a tire on the takeoff. >> monday's incident of a tire falling off a united flight taking off from lax is all too familiar for lauren inthavong. the 23 year old's car was totaled in march after a united flight taking off from sfo. also lost a tire. >> i was in shock because the worst thing that i thought could happen was my car getting broken into. i didn't think, a scenario like that would even happen there in the van, works in a lounge at sfo and commutes from concord. >> since her car was totaled, she says she either borrows one or takes bart. >> i still don't have a car. >> united said in a statement at the time it would work with the owners of damaged vehicles at sfo to ensure their needs were addressed, but inthavong says she didn't know how to reach out directly to the airline to report damage to her car. >> i just didn't really know how to. this was all, like, really new to me. >> in an emailed statement, a united spokesperson tells abc seven news quote, safety is our

highest priority. we worked with everyone who reported damage to their vehicle, but we have not been contacted by the owner of this specific vehicle. united also shared a link where anyone could file a claim with united's customer care team, which she says she'll do in the meantime, she says the family's insurance company did reimburse them for the kelley blue book value of the car. she's hoping united will help as well. >> i just want, you know, some kind of, like, compensation for ruining my car. >> the airline did not respond to our questions about a second incident of a tire falling off a flight during takeoff, something vong says she worries about every time she goes to work. >> what if it's another tire? just fell off? >> there were no reported injuries on the aircraft or on the ground in monday's incident. melanie woodrow abc seven news. >> well, today is the hottest day of this heat wave. see the changing temperatures, though, in sandia's seven-day forecast and is the heat too hot to handle? >> next, the effects of extreme temperatures and what you can do about it. ♪ do what you want ♪

aids walk.com or dot net. i'm sorry. now if you find yourself getting a bit tense or tired during this heat, you are not alone. reporter denise dador from our sister station in los angeles, looks at the problem and some of the solutions. >> reporter it kind of makes me a little grumpy. >> sometimes it makes me more irritable and just more tired when it's hot outside. >> my mood totally changes. >> excessive heat triggers feelings of anxiety, agitation, irritation, and cognitive difficulties. >> psychologist susan albers says in extreme temperatures, our bodies work harder to keep us cool, and that can cause the release of a main stress hormone, cortisol. the effects can be serious during heat waves, we see an increase of suicides. >> substance use, domestic violence and emergency room visits due to mental health issues. >> doctor albers says the heat doesn't cause mental health issues, but it does exacerbate many of the symptoms people experience. >> it gives me a headache and just makes me want to just lay

down and not do anything. >> you're on the right track if you want to lay down and rest. sleep loss can mess with your cognitive abilities and in sizzling temperatures, it's a double whammy. >> hot weather really does a number on sleep, and that does a real number on your functioning during the day. >> la's doctor, colleen kraft says hot weather, brain fog gets you in trouble, especially when you're in a rush. her advice give yourself an extra 15 minutes if you're transporting kids or pets, focus on this important phrase. >> if you don't remember anything else, think look before you lock is a good idea and a good strategy for parents, doctors say the best way to combat mental agitation is to stay hydrated. >> drink water all day long, not only when you feel thirsty, limit caffeine and use simple strategies to stay cool. >> take a cold shower or put a cold washcloth on your forehead. this is going to instantly help with the cognitive symptoms that you may be experiencing during heat waves. >> denise dador abc seven news. >> but a break is coming.
