While Discord is usually a streamlined, reliable place for gamers to talk, there are times when users encounter issues, especially when connecting to voice chat. One of the most common problems is the Discord no route error, which happens when the ISP doesn’t connect, and you can’t use the video service.

That’s why we’ve compiled a list of fixes to help you repair the issue. Since the no route error can be the result of a multitude of things going wrong, it’s a good idea to work through these solutions one at a time until you find the one that fixes your issue. And if none work…well, we’ll get to that later.

Discord No Route Error Fix #1: Change Your Server’s Voice Region

Discord uses regional servers to connect people with one another. Ideally, you want to connect to a voice server close to your geographical location. The closer you are to the server, the lower your latency and the less lag you’ll get.

The simplest solution is to ask your server admin to set a different voice region. The admin can go into the Server Settings window and change the server region to something suitable for most users. If you have admin privileges, you can do this yourself.

Discord No Route Error Fix #2: Disable Your VPN (or Use One with UDP)

Virtual private networks (or VPNs) are becoming increasingly popular with most tech-savvy computer users. A VPN lets you browse privately and anonymously. Even the FTC has a page on how to use a VPN to surf the internet safely, especially when using a public connection.

The problem is, applications that rely on a steady connection sometimes struggle to work well with VPNs. Take Me Discord, for example. It doesn’t work reliably on VPNs that don’t have User Datagram Protocols (UDP).

You can get around this issue by using a VPN that has UDP or switching off your VPN to see if that resolves the no route error. If it does, but you still want the security and anonymity that comes with a VPN, try out a couple that use UDP and see which one works with Discord.

Fix #3: Check Your Network Restrictions (Is Discord Blocked by Your Network Admin?)

You can try to get Discord whitelisted by the network admin, or change the DNS server settings manually.

To change the network DNS, do the following:

  • Open up your Control Panel and then find the Network and Internet Option
  • Select the Network and Sharing Center and click on the Connections link for your desired connection
  • This will give you the Network Properties screen. On the Networking tab, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and hit the Properties button
  • Find the DNS settings and check the ‘Use the following DNS server addresses’ box. Then type in your preferred DNS server as 8.8.8.8 and the alternate server as 8.8.4.4

Reboot your PC and check if this has resolved your no route connection error. If it has, you should be able to connect to a voice channel, no problem.

Fix #4: Check Your Firewall or Antivirus

As malware and viruses get smarter and more intent on destroying your life, many antivirus programs err on the side of caution when blocking programs and incoming network traffic.

If your firewall settings are incorrect, it will block any incoming voice data from Discord. You can manually check your firewall and add an exception by doing the following:

  • Open up the Windows Settings menu
  • Select ‘Update and Security’ and then find the ‘Windows Defender’ option.
  • Then move into the ‘Firewall and network protection menu’ and find the option that allows you to ‘select an app through firewall’.
  • This option will bring up a list of programs that are allowed or blocked by the firewall. Find Discord and make sure that the ‘private’ box is ticked. This means that when you’re on a private network, like at home, the firewall will allow the program to send and receive network traffic.

Some antivirus programs are more aggressive in blocking programs from running than others and may detect Discord as a threat. Be sure to manually add the Discord executable as an exception to your antivirus list. Each antivirus is different, but this process works for most of them.

Fix #5: Restart Your Modem, Router, and Computer

You’ve heard it from every IT tech support guy: Did you try turning it off and on again? And how many times have you not tried that until they asked? Restarting both your computer and router allows the system to start up and clear away any issues that may block your connectivity.

First, try restarting your modem or router without restarting your PC. Close Discord, restart your router and wait for your connection to reestablish itself. Then open Discord and see whether or not the Discord no route issue has resolved itself.

If it hasn’t, bring out the big guns and restart your PC. Sometimes the no route error stems from a jittery dynamic IP. Restarting your PC allows your router to assign you a new, hopefully, more stable dynamic IP that will let you form more stable voice video connections.

Fix #6: Flush Your DNS

The Domain Name System (DNS) translates domain names, like Discord servers, into IP addresses that your computer can understand and interact with. To speed up web browsing, the DNS cache stores the IP addresses for the sites you’ve visited most recently.

Web servers change locations a lot. If this change happens before your DNS cache updates, you’ll run into connectivity issues. The easiest fix for this is to clear your DNS cache and force it to rebuild the cache with updated information.

Clearing your DNS cache is an easy process, though the exact steps will depend on your operating system. If you have Windows 8 or higher, you can use a Command Prompt (Admin) command to do so. To do clear your DNS cache:

  • Open up Command Prompt (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin). The easiest way to access the Command Prompt is to right-click on your Start menu icon in the bottom left corner of your screen. If you see Command Prompt without the (Admin) portion, you’ll have to right-click that shortcut and ‘run as administrator’ to open up the correct window.
  • Once you’re in the console window, type “ipconfig /flushdns” without the quotation marks and press enter. You should see a confirmation message stating ‘successfully flushed the DNS resolver cache’.

If you’re on Windows 7, you can follow the same procedure, though your method for opening up the Command Prompt window will be slightly different. Be sure to run the command in Administrator mode. You’ll know that you were successful if you see the ‘successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache’ message in the window.

Once you’ve cleared the cache, restart both your modem and your PC. Then log back into Discord and see if that fixed your problem.

Fix #7: Renew Your IP Address

Most computers are set up to dynamically assign an IP address when you first connect to a network. Sometimes you may run into an issue where a sudden change in IP address can cause connection issues, both with Discord and with many other programs.

Several Discord members have reported good luck with renewing their IP addresses in solving the no route issue. Renewing an IP address is simple. If the other methods we suggested aren’t working, this might be your golden ticket.

  • Open either Command Prompt or PowerShell. You don’t need administrator privileges to renew your IP.
  • Type “ipconfig /release”, without the quotation marks, and press enter.
  • Once your computer has processed the command, you’ll need to get a new IP address. You can do this by typing “ipconfig /renew” without quotation marks and press enter again.

This will assign a new IP to your computer and hopefully solve your Discord no route voice channel issues and ensure you have a clear route to the Discord server.

Fix #8: Use the WebRTC Troubleshooter

Have you ever wondered how Discord works on every single device you own? It uses a tool called WebRTC to form a real-time connection between your browser or app and the Discord server. This allows users to share files and use audio and video features—that includes voice chat.

Some browsers have compatibility issues with WebRTC, especially if you haven’t updated it in a while. You can download the WebRTC troubleshooter to test your connectivity throughout to ensure that there aren’t any issues with compatibility.

It will even examine your server settings and provide you with steps to follow to improve your overall Discord experience.

The web-based troubleshooter examines every aspect of how your computer interacts with Discord. It’s a great way to not only test your connectivity but to see if you can improve your microphone or camera quality to fix that sound lag and grainy image.

Fix #9: Disable QoS from Voice & Video Settings

Quality of Service (QoS) is a protocol designed to prevent packet loss and minimize latency and interference. It does this by prioritizing data sent or received on a given network and ensuring network resources are allocated correctly to allow for clear voice channel connections.

Discord servers enable Quality of Service to ensure latency-free communication between players. However, it’s a resource-intensive protocol, and older computers or slower networks may have a hard time keeping up.

You can disable Discord’s Quality of Service High Packet Priority by disabling High Packet Priority in your Discord user settings.

  • Start by finding your User Settings in Discord. It’s next to the microphone and headphone icons at the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Open this up and find the ‘Voice and Video’ option under the App Settings section.
  • Scroll down to find the setting ‘Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority’. If the setting is enabled, press the toggle on the side to disable the setting.
  • Exit the user settings and restart Discord.

If you’re able to access your desired voice channel, the change to the Quality of Service High Packet Priority settings has solved your no route problem.

People Also Ask

What does “no route” mean in Discord?

Despite being frustratingly vague, no route is an exact description of the problem. Simply put, Discord is unable to find a route between its server and your PC. It’s one of the most common errors Discord users face, but luckily is also one of the easiest to troubleshoot and resolve.

Similar connectivity issues can include ICE checking and stuck RTC connecting. You can generally resolve these problems by following the same steps as the no route issue which affects voice channels and your ability to connect to a voice channel in a particular server region.

Why is my Discord “no route?”

No route errors can happen for a variety of reasons. It may be that your IP address changed. It may be that Discord connections have been blocked by an antivirus or firewall, or even by your network administrator.

The best way to find the issue is to go through each of the methods we’ve given you here. We covered most of what can go wrong with your connectivity. Once you diagnose the problem, it’s usually easy to resolve and enter back into your voice channel.

What does “RTC connecting” mean on Discord?

RTC connecting is another common connectivity issue that many Discord users face. RTC is the service that Discord uses to connect users to its servers. If you keep getting an RTC connecting error, it’s likely a connectivity issue between your PC and the Discord server, similar to no route or ICE checking problems.

You can follow the same steps you would for a no route error to try and resolve an RTC connecting error. Sometimes many users experience the same error at the same time. That means the problem is on Discord’s side. The bad news here is you can’t really do anything until they fix it.

Hey, at least it’s not your fault, right?
