Why You’ll Love This Sangria Recipe

Sangria is a co*cktail typically made with wine and fruit. Many sangria recipes also include liquors, herbs, spices, and juices to enhance the flavor. Seasonal sangrias tend to pull their flavor inspiration from fruits that are in season.

This pink dragon fruit sangria highlights some of the popular flavors of summer, like lemon, berries, and rose wine. The tropical dragon fruit pairs well with summer citrus and berries. They make this sangria sweet, refreshing, and delicious.

Ingredients for Dragon Fruit Sangria

  • Frozen Dragon Fruit – Frozen dragonfruit, or pitaya, is easier to find in regular grocery stores. Plus, it is a vivid shade of pink. Many fresh dragon fruits have white fruit inside.
  • Frozen Strawberries – Fresh or frozen strawberries work for this recipe. I prefer frozen fruit because it is typically less expensive. And it chills the sangria without watering it down with ice.
  • Prosecco Rosé – Sparkling rosé or rose Prosecco is great for this co*cktail because it adds a bit of effervescence. Prosecco roses typically have a sweeter flavor, with hints of red berries. I use the Kirkland Signature Rose Prosecco from Costco in my sangria.
  • Rosé Wine – Use a slightly sweet and inexpensive rosé for this recipe. According to Food & Wine: “As long as the wine is inexpensive, fruity, and tastes good on its own, it’ll work well in sangria.” One of my favorites is Dark Horse Rose.
  • White Rum – Since rum is distilled from sugar, it always has a slightly toasted sugar flavor profile. This makes it great for tropical co*cktails. White rum is the perfect liquor to complement this sangria. White rum is preferable because it doesn’t change the color of the co*cktail.
  • Lemonade – Nothing screams summer more than a cold glass of lemonade. And lemonade is the perfect sweet drink for this sangria. It adds a tart, citrus, sweetness.
  • Dragon Fruit Syrup – Add a little extra sweetness and dragon fruit flavor with dragonfruit syrup. Purchase a syrup or make your own.
  • Lemon Slices – Fresh lemon slices add an additional bit of tart flavor and acidity to the sangria.
  • Orange Slices – Orange slices add more citrus flavor.

Make Your Own Dragon Fruit Syrup

Simple syrup is a common ingredient for adding sweetness to co*cktails. Flavored syrups add both sweetness and additional flavor. It’s easy to make your own flavored syrup at home. To make dragon fruit syrup all you need is frozen dragon fruit, water, and sugar.

First, combine 1 cup of water, 1 cup of sugar, and 1 cup of frozen dragon fruit in a small saucepan. Then, heat the saucepan on medium heat and bring to a simmer. Allow it to simmer for about 20 minutes. Be sure to stir it every few minutes.

The liquid should be bright pink. What is left of the fruit itself will be very squishy. Strain the syrup using a mesh strainer. You may need to strain it more than once to catch all of the seeds!

Allow the syrup to cool in the refrigerator. Then transfer to a bottle for easy pouring. Homemade fruit syrup lasts about 2 weeks in the refrigerator!

How To Make Dragon Fruit Sangria

This pink sangria is a delicious blend of summer flavors. Its fun color and unique flavor make it perfect for impressing guests too. Enjoy it poolside or for a backyard barbeque.

First, add frozen dragon fruit and frozen strawberries to the bottom of a large pitcher. Then pour the sparkling rose and regular rose over the fruit. Add the white rum, lemonade, and dragon fruit syrup.

Top the sangria off with fresh lemon and orange slices. Stir to combine the ingredients and flavors.

I recommend letting the sangria sit in the refrigerator for at least an hour before serving. This resting time gives the fruit time to permeate the sangria.

Serve this dragon fruit sangria over fresh strawberries and lemon slices. Or serve over ice.

How Long Does This Sangria Last in the Refrigerator?

Sangria typically lasts up to five days open in the refrigerator. Keep in mind that using sparkling wine shortens the shelf life of the sangria. Once the wine goes flat, its flavor profile changes a bit. I wouldn’t recommend storing this particular sangria for more than 2 or 3 days.

Substitutions for This Sangria Recipe

The great thing about sangria is that many different flavor combinations offer similar results. Consider substituting certain ingredients to create a similar flavor profile.

  • Sub Pineapple Juice for Lemonade – If you want a sweeter sangria with a more tropical fruit flavor, use pineapple juice instead! It has the same sweetness as lemonade. And the flavor compliments the citrus and dragon fruit of this tropical sangria.
  • Sub Limes for Lemons – Lime juice also has a more tropical flavor than lemon juice. So consider using limeade instead of lemonade. Since limes have a delicious flavor that compliments this sangria, add a few lime slices if you don’t have a lemon on hand.
  • Sub White Wine for Rose – White wines like Sauvignon Blanc and Vinho Verde are excellent substitutions for rosé in a sangria.
  • Garnish with Mint – A sprig of mint leaves is an excellent garnish for this sangria. It adds a delightful aroma and flavor. Plus, drinks just look pretty with a leafy garnish.
