What are some ways to teach preschoolers about their bodies?
Preschoolers love to learn through song and movement activities, art and play. Singing songs, such as head, shoulders, knees, and toes or the hokey-pokey, plus using movement to show body parts is a really fun way to help children learn parts of the body. We’ve also included lots of hands-on crafts and activities to help the body parts stick!
Why is learning about the human body important for preschoolers?
Preschoolers are learning about their bodies and their needs. Learning the correct words for their body parts and telling adults how their body is feeling is an important step in growing up and becoming more independent. Helping preschoolers communicate effectively now will help you care for them and will set them up to take care of themselves later in life. Children in preschool may not be ready to learn all about their blood cells and in-depth descriptions of their organs, but they are certainly ready to learn that their stomach digests food or how their lungs take in and expel air.

These lesson plans for preschoolers are just one theme in a set of over 40 that will become a part of my free Learn At Home Preschool Lesson Plans.
The Learn at Home Preschool Activity Plans are a set of free activity plans you can use to teach your preschooler at home.
Each set of lesson plans is centered around a weekly theme and includes a minimum of 16 activities that can be done throughout the week. They are designed to be done at home with parents, but many preschool teachers are using these lesson plans, too!
Just glance over the lessons each day, gather the very few materials needed, and you’re ready to go!
All the preschool learningactivities are quick and easy to set up, requiring very little (if any at all) prep and only require the most basic of household materials. This makes them especially easy for parents to implement…and this makes preschool teachers happy, too!

Literacy Activities for a Human Body Preschool Theme
My Body Parts Puzzles – Print, cut, and piece together! These body part puzzles are great for young learners to learn basic body parts. Invite your preschooler to match the body part puzzles and label each part with the beginning sound. For even more fun, use sticky notes and label their own body with the first sound. Put a sticky note on your nose labeled with a /n/, and one on your toes, and see how many beginning sound labels you can make!
Fingerprint Letters – Did you know that your fingerprints are unique and special only to you? Grab these letter cards and print. Using a stamp pad, invite your preschooler to stamp their unique fingerprints on the letter card and practice forming the letters. Start with the letters in your child’s name and see if they can order the letters in their name correctly. How many fingerprints did it take to fill out that letter? Use different fingerprints and examine the lines!

Learning about the human body can be a bit abstract so using high-quality books is necessary to help children learn how their body works in amazing ways. This is a book list of our best-loved picture books for a human body theme.
Math and Science Activities for a Human Body Theme in Preschool
Everyday VS. Sometimes Foods – Using grocery ads or magazines, invite your preschooler to sort healthy/everyday foods versus sometimes foods. Share that some foods are more nutritious than others and discuss things like nutrients and vitamins that help food give our bodies energy and strength. Healthy foods make healthy bodies and that’s a great lesson for all ages.
Q-Tip X-ray Count – Using black paper trace the hands with white chalk. Then add q-tips for bones. Count how many bones/q-tips you needed to fill in the hands. For an even bigger challenge, invite your preschooler to trace their whole body and use straws to create “bones”. That’s a lot of bones!
Paper Bag Lungs – With two paper bags, two straws, and strong duct tape, you and your preschooler can replicate how the lungs work in our bodies. Show the child a model of the lungs and invite them to draw the lungs on the paper bags.
Playful Preschool Learning Activities for a Human Body Theme
Play Hop Scotch – Draw a chalk version of hopscotch outside with chalk or inside with painter’s tape. Before playing, invite your preschooler to see how long they can balance on one leg. Invite them to practice hopping on one leg as they count and jump from square to square.
Make Cloud Dough – This dough comes together with just two ingredients! Cloud dough is soft and fun to play and stretch plus it’s a true sensory experience!
Play Go Fish – In this simple card game, everyone gets 5-7 cards depending on the number of players. Then, each player goes around in circles asking for a match to their card. Lay your matches down. If no match, say Go Fish. The winner has the most matches.
Social-Emotional Activities for a Human Body Preschool Theme
Exercise Your Brain (Growth Mindset) – Teach your preschooler about the power of exercising your brain and helping it grow, learn, and get stronger. It’s important for children to learn at an early age that intelligence is developed and that you are not born “smart”. This simple video on growth mindset does a great job of helping children learn to exercise their brains by doing hard things. Print and read this emergent reader together and discuss how they can help their brain grow and learn to do hard things.
Instead of “I Can’t”, We Can Say ”Not Yet” – Go to YouTube and listen to the story, Not Yet by Lisa Cox. This story shares the excitement of learning to do new things while helping children understand that with perseverance, they will turn their “not yet” into “I did it” one day! Remind your preschooler to turn their ”I can’t” into ”I can’t yet”. Make a list of all the things that they can do. Remind them that those things were all learned… ”Could you do those things as a baby?” What are some things you can’t do yet that you really want to learn? Practice!
Just Plain Fun Human Body Activities for Preschoolers
Inside My Body Sensory Bin – Soak some red water beads and print out different organs for a hands-on exploration of our bodies. Challenge your preschooler to find and name all the organs in the bin!
Eat the Rainbow – Teach healthy eating habits with this fun and colorful game to eat new colors each day!
How Germs Spread Experiment – This experiment helps to understand how germs work and why it’s important to wash hands frequently. Sprinkle some colorful glitter (germs) on your hands and rub. Pass the germs…Then wash with water. What happens? Use soap. Did it wash away “germs”?
Get Online Activities for a Human Body Theme
Online Story – Go to YouTube and listen to the story, Me and My Amazing Body by Joan Sweeney. Pause the video after each page and talk about what interesting info was learned. Invite your preschooler to point out the different body parts on each page and encourage questions. Ask, “Why do you think the author calls your brain the boss of your body?
Parts of the Body Video – Move your body parts and sing and groove along as you learn over 15 different body parts!
