FAQs

What's the best way to cook a filet mignon on the grill? ›

Medium (140-145°F or 60-63°C internal temperature):
  1. Sear the steak for 2-3 minutes per side over high heat.
  2. Move the steak to a cooler area of the grill or lower the heat, and cook for an additional 8-10 minutes, turning occasionally.

Is filet mignon supposed to be wrapped in bacon? ›

Wrapping a tenderloin steak in bacon serves three purposes: 1) infuses the filet with savory, salty, umami goodness as it bastes the filet with bacon fat. 2) prevents the filets from drying out, making them even more succulently juicy as the fat seeps into the steaks. 3) creates a caramelized crust from the extra fat.

Should you pan sear filet mignon before grilling? ›

Searing meat doesn't create an impermeable barrier that prevents the release of natural juices when cooking or slicing a steak or other cut of meat. But that doesn't mean you should abandon searing altogether. You should always consider searing steaks before grilling, baking, braising, roasting, or sautéeing.

Do you put olive oil on filet mignon before grilling? ›

Brush olive oil lightly over all sides. Then, season generously with salt and pepper. Allow to rest at room temperature for the rest of the 30 minutes. Meanwhile, fire up the grill over high heat.

Should I oil filet mignon before grilling? ›

The oil will help to season the grates and prevent the steak from sticking. You should also drizzle some really good olive oil onto your steak before you begin eating it. Give it a sprinkling of kosher salt and ground black pepper as well.

Should you poke holes in filet mignon? ›

Probing also helps you know the meat temperature to avoid overcooking. Another benefit that has been associated with poking holes in raw meat is that it helps tenderize the meat. The piercings allow heat to penetrate deeper when cooking, cutting down on the cooking time and making the meat tender.

Why don t Jews eat filet mignon? ›

Technically, filet mignon is as kosher as any other cut of meat. The problem with filet mignon and other cuts from the rear is that they are located near the sciatic nerve and fatty deposits known in Hebrew as chelev, which are Biblically forbidden.

Why do people wrap filet in bacon? ›

As filets are often grilled, seared, or roasted, adding fats is vital to keeping the cut moist and tender. If it is cooked without added fats like butter or bacon, a filet can quickly dry out. No one wants to waste a spectacular — and pricey — cut of beef like filet mignon by cooking it wrong.

Assuming your cut of meat is between 1.5 and 2 inches, it takes 3 to 4 minutes per side for a rare steak, 3.5 to 4.5 minutes per side to reach medium rare, and 4 to 5 minutes per side to cook the filet to medium rare.

How to grill bacon wrapped filets on a gas grill? ›

Preheat grill to 450°F. Grill the steaks over high heat for 5 to 6 minutes per side with the lid closed. Flip the steaks a quarter turn so that the bacon faces the grate. Rotate and grill for 15 seconds per side or until the bacon is brown and lightly crisp.

Is filet mignon better on grill or oven? ›

The best way to cook Filet Mignon is on the grill, but pan-seared Filet Mignon is also excellent. You can also broil Filet Mignon in the oven for an exceptional flavor.

Should I cook filet mignon in butter or oil? ›

I like to use a combination of oil and butter for cooking the steak. Make sure you use a high-smoke point oil. I like to use Avocado Oil, Grapeseed Oil, or Olive Oil. Extra virgin olive oil does not have that high of a smoke point so I do not suggest using it.

Do you cook filet mignon fast or slow? ›

The best method for how to cook filet mignon is quickly with direct heat. Opt for cooking methods such as broiling, grilling, and pan-frying. Long, slow cooking (or any overcooking) will dry out this cut of steak, robbing it of its flavor and tenderness.
