A classic in the case of rodent catching needs, spring traps are always a good option. Victor Easy Set Gopher Traps work just as well to capture other larger rodents, such as groundhogs.

The already assembled spring loaded traps are very easy to set up. They are purposefully designed to be narrow so that they can be inserted directly into the tunnels or burrows of large rodents. When placed back to back in tunnels, they prove especially effective.

While it may seem unsafe to place spring traps in a backyard, especially one that is home to families or pets, the fact that these can be placed directly in tunnels means they are far from being able to hurt anyone by mistake.

They can be used in any type of soil and are strong and durable. Coming in at a very affordable price, the classic snap trap has proven to still be valuable.

Gardeners and farmers will notice damage right away, as groundhogs are notorious for rummaging through crops and plants to find their excessive meals.

Additional Advice

Groundhogs may not be the typical, everyday rodent that you are used to facing, but they are pretty common. It’s not unlikely that you find one in your backyard, especially if you are an avid gardener. Since you may not deal with them regularly, it can be hard to know what to do—or even know anything about them.

We find that a little bit of knowledge goes a long way. That’s why we have provided you with this general information section about groundhogs to help you gain some basic knowledge of the animals you are trying to defeat.

About Groundhogs

Groundhogs, as we mentioned earlier, are the largest relatives in the squirrel family. They have also been referred to as woodchucks or “mouse bears” because of their appearance. These large rodents are typically 20 inches long and weigh anywhere from 6 to 12 pounds. In the wild, they tend to live from 3 to 6 years.

The furry creatures are what some experts call an “edge” species. This means that these animals prefer to live in transitional areas, like where a forest meets an open field with lots of vegetation. They dig complex burrows underground where they spend most of their time. They normally construct their burrows near cover like trees, hedgerows, and home foundations.

When above ground, groundhogs are usually searching for food. They eat about 1/3 of their weight in vegetation every day. They are mainly herbivores, although sometimes they will partake in the occasional insect.

Groundhogs are active during the day and sleep at night, but they are also true hibernators. Around October, they enter a deep sleep within their burrows and emerge in early spring. They survive on fat reserves from their fall and summer diets.

Groundhog Damage

While there are definitely animals that pose larger threats than groundhogs do, they can be pesky animals who cause damage to home and property. There a few signs you can keep an eye out for to identify if you may have a groundhog problem.

You may see 1/4 to 3/4″ wide teeth marks on any wood, plantings, and trees on your property. These are signs that groundhogs are gnawing on things.

Another sure sign of groundhogs is deep holes in your lawn along with mounds of soil outside of them. Sometimes in serious situations, burrows near homes can cause weakened foundations.

Gardeners and farmers will notice damage right away, as groundhogs are notorious for rummaging through crops and plants to find their excessive meals. Since groundhogs eat so much, it won’t be hard to spot when they have located any fruit or vegetables you have been growing.

In addition, to chew on wood, groundhogs can also get their teeth around tubing, pipes, wires, and irrigation systems. Damage to these could be due to one of these large rodents.

Finally, keep an eye out for tracks. Groundhogs have five toes on their front feet and four on their rear. Footprints such as these mean there is a groundhog in the area. Their claw markings are very distinct.
