Why is there a shortage of Enfamil Gentlease baby formula? ›

Enfamil Gentlease is out of stock due to supply chain issues. People who used Gentlease are struggling. There are alternatives, but not all are suitable for all babies. Generic Gentle is not an alternative for many babies on Gentlease due to sensitivities.

If you cannot find infant formula and you usually give your child a regular infant formula, you can give your 6 month to 12 month old child some pasteurized (not raw), unflavored, whole cow's milk. Cow's milk should only be given for a short time (no more than a week) as instructed by your child's doctor.

It's also generally fine for most babies to switch between ready-to-feed, concentrated liquid, or powdered formula. "The exception might be preemies or immunocompromised babies under 3 months of age who may not be able to take powdered formula yet," says Dr. Jain.

While it shouldn't be a regular practice, most baby formulas have similar ingredients with only minor differences, so mixing them typically doesn't pose long-term health issues.

Is Total Comfort the same as Gentlease? ›

Young. The two formulas have different protein sources, which may affect your baby's comfort: Gentlease uses a partially hydrolyzed mix of 60% whey and 40% casein while the Pro-Total Comfort makes use of 100% whey protein that's been partially hydrolyzed.

The baby formula crisis and the conditions that created it. The formula shortage stemmed from a product recall by an Abbott Nutrition facility in Michigan, where unsanitary conditions and contaminated products led the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to temporarily shut down the facility.
